Nier: Automata is a 2017 action role-playing game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It is a sequel to the 2010 video game Nier, which itself is a spin-off and a continuation of the Drakengard series.

Set during a proxy war between alien-created machines and human-crafted androids, the story follows the trials of combat android 2B, scanner android 9S, and rogue prototype A2.

Production began in 2014, with series creator Yoko Taro, producer Yosuke Saito and main composer Keiichi Okabe returning to their respective roles, and artist Akihiko Yoshida taking responsibility for character design. The goal was to create a Nier game that stayed true to the spirit of the original while developing a better battle system. Since this is a completely new project for PlatinumGames, the staff faced numerous challenges in developing the gameplay and open-world environment. The story, written by Yoko, draws on various philosophies and explores themes such as the search for value in life and the reasons why people kill.

Announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015, Nier: Automata received media expansions to its world and story, as well as downloadable content and crossovers with other games upon release.
